This lecture aims to give an overview of the evolution of endband
making in the Byzantine bookbinding tradition from the simplest
forms to the most elaborate ones using both drawings and
photographs. All known types will be considered but special
attention will be paid upon the so-called woven endbands, probably
the most elaborate and most intriguing ones as they are closely
related to techniques originally devised and used in textile making.
Finally the use of endbands as a possible hint for the
identification of the provenance of bookbindings will be touched
upon.
