This year's class schedule will include the director of the Montefiascone Project, Cheryl Porter, studying natural materials and processes to re-create the Medieval colour palette, and freelance conservator and consultant, Ana Beny, exploring the history of Spanish gothic wooden binding structures in the "Mudejar" style. Peachey, will be take participants through the construction of a typical full calf late eighteenth century French binding. Conservation By Design managing director, Mike Brown, said: "The Nicholas Hadgraft Memorial Scholarship is now so highly regarded within the conservation sector that we receive interest from people all over the globe, who are keen to grasp this wonderful opportunity. Every year we are astounded by the quality of the applications we receive, and we expect that 2012 will be no different. "The summer school presents a unique opportunity for its delegates to form new friends, share knowledge and a love of precious books and bookbinding in a stunning setting. This year, to make sure our winning scholar is able to make the most of this magnificent course, we have increased the award from UKP1,000 to UKP1,500. With such a prestigious prize on offer, we're sure we'll see more entries than ever before and encourage students, conservators and book binders to download the application form and submit it before the deadline on 30 April 2012." Czech book and paper conservator, Bohuslava Ticha, who was last year's lucky recipient of the coveted scholarship, added: "Montefiascone is very beautiful place with a great and relaxing atmosphere which naturally made the course experience enjoyable and very inspiring. "The course helped greatly with both my personal and professional development, and gave me the direction in my career that I had hoped for. It was such an amazing workshop, and I would strongly recommend applying to anyone who wishes to develop and improve their conservation skills." The scholarship is offered in memory of Dr Nicholas Hadgraft, a good friend of Conservation By Design who died tragically in 2004. Nicholas was a fellow of the University of the Arts London and a key collaborator on the "Squelch Drying" technique devised by Stuart Welch (the founder of CXD), the most effective way to date of drying valuable rare books. Nicholas was a regular tutor at Montefiascone and took great pleasure imparting his knowledge and sharing his love of books and bookbinding with like minded individuals. Application forms are now available from the CXD website <URL:http://www.conservation-by-design.co.uk> Completed applications must be received by 30 April 2012 and the successful applicant will be notified in June.
