Continuing Professional Development Courses

Conservation for Horologists
1-4 October 2012

Course leader: Trevor Waddington

Many experienced horologists, although knowledgeable and
competent in repair and restoration, lack an understanding of
the conservation approach to horology. Approved by the
Institute of Conservation (Icon), this course is unique, being
specially designed to bridge the knowledge gap and, in
particular, prepare participants for PACR accreditation. The
course comprises mainly lectures, but visits to the clocks
workshop and the College conservation laboratory are also
programmed. Lecturers include the College's clocks, metals and
furniture tutors. Visiting lecturers are: David Thompson FBHI,
senior horological curator at the British Museum, Dr Michael
Flannery MBHI, a recently-qualified ACR, and Susan Bradshaw ACR,
    Icon accreditation manager.

Participants are invited to bring with them particular
conservation issues or problems for group discussion, with the
aim of the tutors and group working on solutions.

Archival Documents for Conservators
15-19 October 2012
Course leader: Chris Woods

This course aims to help conservators to understand why archival
documents look like they do, what aspects of them must be
preserved, and how to set about protecting them and their
provenance. It will comprise lectures on archival history and
conservation, and sustained practical workshops that involve
handling and care for real archives dating from medieval times
to the present. It presents an opportunity to identify, record
and undertake protective measures for documents and for
conservators especially a chance to develop new skills in
identifying formats and materials and undertaking treatments for
parchment, early papers and wax and shellac seals.

    Non-residential course fee: UKP497 Fully-inclusive residential
    course fee: From UKP677

Conservation of Historic Floors
22-25 October 2012
Course leader: Francesca Scoones
Principal tutor: Jane Fawcett

This course will give a rare opportunity to hear from experts
about some of the problems created by the steady erosion of all
types of historic floor and to consider some of the solutions
available for their protection and conservation.

We are all aware of the damage inflicted by daily use on
decorative pavements and we know the contribution made by
mosaics, tiles, parquetry, marble, stone, ledger stones and
engraved slabs to a historic interior whether ecclesiastical or
secular. The extent of the loss of historical evidence,
particularly in ecclesiastical buildings is, however, little
understood, and the methods of recording it are often
inadequate. In many cases it is now too late, and the
    destruction has been total.

On this course, leading authorities will attempt to answer some
of these questions, to weigh the demands of tourism against
those of conservation, and to provide examples of what has been
done, and how, where and when.
