Post-graduate Mellon Fellowship in objects conservation Historic New England Historic New England is seeking applications for a 12-month postgraduate fellowship in conservation beginning in the fall of 2012. Historic New England, the oldest and largest regional preservation organization in the United States, owns and operates 36 historic house museums in five states, from Rhode Island to mid-coast Maine. With more than 110,000 objects, Historic New England has the most comprehensive and best documented collection of New England decorative arts and household furnishings in the country. These collections, which date from the mid-seventeenth to the twenty-first centuries, include the whole range of goods needed for day-to-day life, from furniture and clothing to cooking and heating equipment. Projects for the year will focus on the examination and treatment of jewelry for an upcoming traveling exhibition, and objects and interiors from the Quincy House, Quincy, Massachusetts, built in 1770 by Revolutionary War leader Colonel Josiah Quincy. Treatment and preventive care of objects from Historic New England's other properties including Beauport, The Sleeper-McCann House, Gloucester, Massachusetts, will also be ongoing. The successful candidate will gain considerable experience treating a wide variety of materials in a well equipped, production-oriented conservation laboratory. Candidates must be graduates of a conservation training program or have equivalent experience and be legally entitled to work in the United States. The stipend for the fellowship is $25,000 a year plus health benefits. Additional funds for travel and research may be available. The fellowship is based at Historic New England's conservation laboratory located in the Collections and Conservation Center in Haverhill, Massachusetts, approximately 45 minutes north of Boston.
