Post-graduate Mellon Fellowship in objects conservation
Historic New England

Historic New England is seeking applications for a 12-month
postgraduate fellowship in conservation beginning in the fall of
2012. Historic New England, the oldest and largest regional
preservation organization in the United States, owns and operates 36
historic house museums in five states, from Rhode Island to
mid-coast Maine. With more than 110,000 objects, Historic New
England has the most comprehensive and best documented collection of
New England decorative arts and household furnishings in the
country. These collections, which date from the mid-seventeenth to
the twenty-first centuries, include the whole range of goods needed
for day-to-day life, from furniture and clothing to cooking and
heating equipment.

Projects for the year will focus on the examination and treatment of
jewelry for an upcoming traveling exhibition, and objects and
interiors from the Quincy House, Quincy, Massachusetts, built in
1770 by Revolutionary War leader Colonel Josiah Quincy. Treatment
and preventive care of objects from Historic New England's other
properties including Beauport, The Sleeper-McCann House, Gloucester,
Massachusetts, will also be ongoing. The successful candidate will
gain considerable experience treating a wide variety of materials in
a well equipped, production-oriented conservation laboratory.

Candidates must be graduates of a conservation training program or
have equivalent experience and be legally entitled to work in the
United States. The stipend for the fellowship is $25,000 a year plus
health benefits. Additional funds for travel and research may be
available. The fellowship is based at Historic New England's
conservation laboratory located in the Collections and Conservation
Center in Haverhill, Massachusetts, approximately 45 minutes north
of Boston.

Applications will be accepted through April 2, 2012. Please send
curriculum vitae and cover letter to jobs<-at->historicnewengland<.>org or
mail to Historic New England, 151 Essex Street, Haverhill, MA 01832,
Attn: Michaela Neiro, Associate Conservator.
