Permanent - Full Time position

A vacancy exists in the document conservation lab of the Collections
Management Branch, State Archives of North Carolina.  The Archives
Conservator manages the daily operations of the lab and works with
division management in developing and implementing a comprehensive
preservation program for the division, assesses individual items for
conservation treatment, and proposes and performs conservation
treatments on permanent collections of State Archives.  He/she will
manage lab equipment and supplies and maintains documentary records
concerning all conservation treatments. The position oversees
contract conservation work performed by outside labs.  He/she
advises the general public, division and departmental staff, and
state and local records custodians on matters related to
conservation of historical and documentary materials. Assists
Collections Management Branch Head in preservation programming,
including environmental monitoring and disaster preparedness
planning and disaster response.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: A masters degree in museum
conservation with an emphasis on book and paper conservation.
Knowledge of current paper and book conservation and preservation
standards and practices and the ability to apply these in the
planning and implementation of a comprehensive archival conservation
program.  Ability to analyze and evaluate a variety of archival
materials and formats, recommend conservation treatments, and
perform advanced conservation treatments on bound and unbound
materials.  Knowledge of and skill in use of laboratory equipment
and appropriate laboratory procedures.  Knowledge of historical and
current binding techniques. Knowledge of conservation ethics.
Knowledge of paper chemistry. Ability to work independently; to
train and direct work of volunteers and interns; and to develop and
maintain effective working relationships with agency staff,
government officials, and the general public.  Ability to
communicate effectively orally and in writing.
