As before, the course will be delivered by Alex Schouvaloff, who has extensive teaching experience at London Metropolitan University, City and Guilds of London Art School and West Dean College. Alex is a Senior Lecturer at London Metropolitan and Head of Wood Conservation at C&G. He also has a studio in South East London which specialises in the restoration and conservation of japanned and lacquered artefacts. The course will be practical based and attendees are strongly advised to arrive with an object in need of treatment. In addition to the primary task of working on objects, some lectures and demonstrations will be given. The concept is not necessarily to leave with a complete conservation or restoration treatment in place, but to build your knowledge and confidence so that you can continue to work on your object and tackle others. Japanning also benefits from being an excellent vehicle to bring a number of transferable skills to the table What to bring: Attendees are strongly advised to bring an object to work on. Please email Alex with photographs of your objects and he can advise if suitable.Alex will have many materials and sundries onsite, but please bring your own brushes, resins, cleaning materials and anything else you think might be useful. The venue is a conservation studio situated next to London Fields with easy transport connections. It is within a 10 minute walking distance from Bethnal Green-central line tube or a 5 minute walk from London Fields main-line trains from Liverpool St. Station. The fully equipped studio space has excellent natural light and has enough bench space to accommodate 10 people. On site is an excellent cafe where morning coffee, a light lunch and afternoon tea have been included in the overall price.
