Book Conservator
Conservation Scientist
Orientalist Museum, Doha Qatar

The Orientalist Museum contains of one of the most significant
collections of Orientalist art ever assembled in the world. The
Orientalist Museum collection consists of paintings, drawings,
prints, sculptures, books and examples of applied art by the most
popular artists of the 16th to 20th centuries. The variety of the
artworks gives the collection world heritage value and demonstrates
the appreciation of differences and similarities in European visions
of the Middle East.

Book Conservator

    The Orientalist Museum is recruiting a full time book
    conservator who is responsible for the physical care,
    preservation, and conservation treatment of books and archive
    materials in the collections at the Orientalist Museum.

    Responsibilities:

        Examine, document and treat books and archival materials
        within the Orientalist Museum Collection.

        Provide full written and photographic documentation of
        treatments.

        Prepare condition assessments, conduct surveys, and provide
        other written reports as necessary.

        Prepare objects for exhibitions and loans including checking
        conditions, organizing packing materials for transit,

        Monitor and assess the environmental conditions in storage
        and galleries for book and archival materials.

        Organize, maintain, and manage the conservation laboratory.

        Train other museum staff who get involved in handling the
        museum collection.

    Qualifications and experience:  Master's degree from a
    recognized conservation program with a minimum of three years
    experience in book conservation or equivalent combination of
    education and training. Thorough knowledge of conservation
    theory and practice, and materials science as it applies to
    books and archival materials. Knowledge of a range of historical
    bookbinding structures. Excellence in performing complex
    conservation treatments on a wide range of books and archival
    materials as demonstrated through a portfolio. Excellent
    communication and organizational skills and demonstrated
    computer and related technology skills.

Conservation Scientist

    The Orientalist Museum is seeking a full time conservation
    scientist to work in close collaboration with conservators and
    curators at the Museum. The conservation scientist will
    undertake research and investigation of a wide range of
    materials in the collection.

    Requirement: S/he will have a relevant science background in
    materials science, organic chemistry, or polymer science
    combined with skill and experience in analysis of museum
    artifacts using analytical techniques and equipment such as XRF,
    FTIR, SEM, GC-MS and other appropriate techniques. Good
    organizational and research skills are essential.

    Qualifications: PhD in chemistry or materials science.
