"Wood in the 21st Century: Design and Preservation of Contemporary and Historic Architecture" MIT Cambridge, Massachusetts March 24-25, 2012 The intensive two-day conference on architectural wood will be held on the MIT campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Saturday, March 24-Sunday, March 25, 2012, with an optional program offered (at no additional charge) on Monday, March 26, 2012.This symposium is organized by Technology and Conservation, the MIT Department of Architecture's Building Technology Program, and the Boston Society of Architects/AIA's Historic Resources Committee. Over 30 noted architects, engineers, and researchers will give presentations. Among the topics that will be covered are: Basic properties of wood and their effect on performance and durability; Advances in wood-based materials and development in construction techniques for use in restoration/preservation projects and in new designs; Procedures for evaluating structural wood's condition; Steps to prevent and/or minimize degradation, as well as several case histories focusing on both historic wood buildings and modern ones that represent a variety of building types (including education, religious, cultural institutions; military and government structures; residential and commercial buildings). There also will be several poster on display with presentations dealing with traditional and innovative preservation treatments and restoration methods, construction techniques, and wood composite materials.
