Project Paintings Conservators (2 position) Whitney Museum of American Art Temporary, Full time Position (12 months) The Whitney Museum of American Art seeks two paintings conservators for our Collections Documentation Initiative. The Collection Documentation Initiative (CDI) is a project focused on cataloguing, researching, photographing, and conducting conservation assessments for works of art in the Whitney Museum's permanent collection. The first phase of the project, scheduled to be completed in April 2012, concentrated on works of art on paper. The second phase, beginning in May 2012, will be devoted to painting and sculpture. The conservators will work alongside staff from other departments as we survey and document our entire collection of paintings. The project will take place at the museums storage facility in Manhattan. Duties will include: creating a full description of each painting with regards to the materials of its fabrication, generating a condition report of its current state, and working with the cataloguer to ensure that object-specific information is accurate, as well as advising on proper handling and housing of specific works. Requirements: M.A. in Art Conservation, or equivalent training with a specialization in paintings conservation; knowledge of current standards of practice and methodology for the examination of paintings; familiarity with and interest in 20th and 21st century artists' materials and techniques; demonstrated organizational and writing skills; familiarity with the TMS collection management system; and the ability to develop and maintain collegial and collaborative relationships with other project staff.
