Project Paintings Conservators (2 position)
Whitney Museum of American Art

Temporary, Full time Position (12 months)

The Whitney Museum of American Art seeks two paintings conservators
for our Collections Documentation Initiative. The Collection
Documentation Initiative (CDI) is a project focused on cataloguing,
researching, photographing, and conducting conservation assessments
for works of art in the Whitney Museum's permanent collection. The
first phase of the project, scheduled to be completed in April 2012,
concentrated on works of art on paper. The second phase, beginning
in May 2012, will be devoted to painting and sculpture.

The conservators will work alongside staff from other departments as
we survey and document our entire collection of paintings. The
project will take place at the museums storage facility in
Manhattan. Duties will include: creating a full description of each
painting with regards to the materials of its fabrication,
generating a condition report of its current state, and working with
the cataloguer to ensure that object-specific information is
accurate, as well as advising on proper handling and housing of
specific works.

Requirements: M.A. in Art Conservation, or equivalent training with
a specialization in paintings conservation; knowledge of current
standards of practice and methodology for the examination of
paintings; familiarity with and interest in 20th and 21st century
artists' materials and techniques; demonstrated organizational and
writing skills; familiarity with the TMS collection management
system; and the ability to develop and maintain collegial and
collaborative relationships with other project staff.
