Subject: Phytate treatment
I am a paper conservator. My colleague and I are trying the phytate treatment on maps with iron gall ink. For alkalisation, calcium bicarbonate is used. However this is an elaborate preparation. Has anyone used calcium hydroxide in this type of treatment? What is the benefit of the bicarbonate?
