The Image Permanence Institute (IPI), a recognized leader in the
development and deployment of sustainable practices for the
preservation of images and cultural property, is seeking a
Preservation Environment Specialist to join their staff.  Candidates
should have experience in the field of preservation and a strong
interest in preventive conservation, managing the environment for
preservation, and sustainable energy practices. Presentation,
writing, and project management skills are required. Knowledge of
mechanical system operation and/or research methods is very
desirable.

The Preservation Environment Specialist will work with IPI staff to
provide information on best practices in managing the storage
environment in collecting institutions. The job requires on- and
off-site consultation, development and presentation of workshops,
seminars, webinars, and conference presentations on IPI's
environmental projects, the role of mechanical systems in providing
an appropriate storage environment, and balancing sustainable energy
practices with collection preservation. The candidate must have the
ability to prepare articles on these subjects for both peer-reviewed
journals and practical educational publications. Potential research
activities include the design and implementation of scientific
experiments, evaluation and analysis of resulting data, and
preparation of reports.

Candidates should have an advanced degree or equivalent experience
in Library Science, Archives Management, Museum Studies,
Conservation, Material Science, or Engineering. Five years relevant
experience in the museum, library, archive, or conservation field
focused on collection care and preservation is preferred. This
position involves frequent travel both nationally and
internationally.

About the Image Permanence Institute (IPI): IPI is a nonprofit,
university-based laboratory devoted to preservation research. IPI
was founded in 1985 through the combined efforts and sponsorship of
the Rochester Institute of Technology and the Society for Imaging
Science and Technology. Funding for IPI's preservation research and
outreach efforts has come primarily from the National Endowment for
the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. IPI provides information,
consulting services, practical tools and preservation technology to
libraries, archives, and museums worldwide. The imaging and consumer
preservation industries also use IPI's consulting, testing and
educational services. IPI is part of the College of Imaging Arts and
Sciences at the Rochester Institute of Technology located southwest
of the city of Rochester, New York.
