The Morgan Library and Museum invites applications for the position
of Assistant Paper Conservator in the Thaw Conservation Center. The
primary responsibility of the Assistant Paper Conservator is to aid
in the examination/documentation, analysis, research, treatment and
long-term preservation of the Morgan's collection in close
collaboration with conservation, curatorial, and collections care
staff. This will include treatment of a range of paper- and
parchment- based items and the implementation of preventative care
policies and procedures to mitigate deterioration and damage. The
conservator will also evaluate and track loan requests; help in the
creation and execution of collections surveys; and facilitate the
daily activities of Interns, Fellows, and Volunteers. This position
may be asked to undertake courier trips. The Assistant Paper
Conservator will report to the Director of the Thaw Conservation
Center.

Qualifications

    Graduate degree in conservation with a specialization in
    conservation of works of art on paper from a recognized training
    program

    A minimum of three (3) years work experience in the conservation
    of paper- and parchment- based items, preferably in a museum or
    library conservation department setting

    Demonstrated commitment to conservation through presentations,
    teaching, publications, and/or professional service

    Ability to partner effectively, and work as part of a team

    Ability to safely handle rare and fragile materials and work
    with small tools with accuracy and precision

    Knowledge of documentation procedures including digital
    photography and other imaging techniques

    Understanding of and adherence to the AIC Code of Ethics and
    Guidelines for Practice

    Knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of works on
    paper and parchment and bound materials, the substances used to
    treat them, and the analytical techniques for identifying and/or
    determining changes in them

    Familiarity with foreign languages (French, Latin, German,
    Italian)

    Proficiency working with Microsoft Windows and Mac Photoshop

    Strong interpersonal and written communication skills

    Able to work for extended periods standing or at a computer
    workstation; able to lift moderately heavy boxes and tolerate
    moderate levels of dust

    Physically capable and willing to travel as it relates to
    courier trips
