Assistant/Associate Conservator
The Cloisters
The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Since 1870, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the preeminent
cultural institutions in the world, has considered its employees
among its greatest assets. The Museum provides exciting
opportunities for employees to enrich and develop their love of the
arts while contributing their specific skills and talents to the
mission of the Museum.

The Assistant/Associate Conservator will be the second conservator
on site reporting to the overall Objects Conservation Department
head and the Senior Conservator in Residence at The Cloisters, a
branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art dedicated to European
Medieval Art. The position will be based at the Sherman Fairchild
Center for Objects Conservation at The Cloisters, a modern and fully
equipped laboratory, with additional access to the extensive
resources of the Sherman Fairchild Center for Objects Conservation
and the Department of Scientific Research in the main building of
the Museum. Monumental stone architectural elements or sculptures at
The Cloisters will be the candidate's main focus. On occasion the
incumbent will also be involved in related work elsewhere in the
Museum. This position will require close collaboration with the
curatorial staff of the Department of Medieval Art and The
Cloisters.

Primary Responsibilities and Specific Duties: The successful
candidate will evaluate the condition, materials, research,
treatment, and monitoring of monumental stone architectural elements
and sculptures at The Cloisters. Duties include standardized written
and photographic documentation of work performed and investigation
of emerging technologies in the presentation of monumental
sculptures to improve the visibility of the collection at The
Cloisters (3D imaging, website, or paper publications). He/she will
cooperate with the Department of Scientific Research at the MMA and
Columbia University's Department of Historic Preservation for
ongoing research in stone conservation and analysis, collaborate
with and/or oversee contractors and consultants retained for work at
The Cloisters, and review relevant proposals and documents, in
addition to other related duties as necessary.

Requirements and Experience: Experience and Skills: At least three
years (or six years for the Associate level) of museum or site based
experience in conservation, preferably concentrating on the
examination and treatment of European Medieval sculpture and
objects, and with a demonstrated capacity for independent research
as well as experience with the conservation of monumental stone
sculpture and/or architectural conservation. Must demonstrate
proficiency in laboratory methods and the use of analytical
instrumentation as related to conservation, with a noted interest in
petrographic analysis and the study of stone decay; the ability to
work with a team; and experience with work on scaffolding,
preferred. The Associate level requires publication related to the
technology and preservation of works of art.

Knowledge and Education: A Master's degree in art history,
archaeology, or other field related to the conservation of works of
art is required. Interest in Medieval Art is preferred as is a
degree from a graduate-level program in conservation or the
equivalent.
