Assistant Objects Conservator
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston seeks a full-time Assistant Objects
Conservator to fill a term position ending June 30, 2012. The
position may be renewed annually on July 1st of each year.

Under the direction of the lab head:

Engage in activities related to national and international traveling
exhibitions and tours, in-house exhibitions and gallery rotations,
in addition to supporting general activities of the Objects
Conservation Laboratory.

(The Objects Conservation division is responsible for the
preservation, examination and treatment of three-dimensional objects
and sculpture in this encyclopedic collection which spans the
history of western and non-western art, ranging from archaeological
material to contemporary art.)

Essential Functions:

    Travel with touring exhibitions and loans, and participate in
    preservation and conservation activities associated with them.

    Work closely with venues to develop safe exhibition
    environments, develop planning documents for traveling
    exhibitions, evaluate and articulate the needs of objects
    considered for travel, produce photographic and written
    documentation, and assist in installation and deinstallation
    activities.

    Work collaboratively with curators, conservators, mountmakers,
    designers, and collections care staff in support of exhibition
    and loan activities.

    Perform other duties as responsibilities necessitate.

Qualifications:

    Applicants should have a Master's degree (M.A. or M.S.) with a
    specialization in objects conservation from a recognized
    conservation training program.

    At least two years of post-training experience is strongly
    preferred, as is previous work as a courier for exhibitions.

    Strong communication skills and the ability to work
    independently are required.

    Willingness/ability to travel extensively, as the main courier
    for touring exhibitions.
