Subject: Sanitary wallpapers
I am in my final semester of a postgraduate degree in Conservation of Works of Art on Paper, at Northumbria University in the UK. At the moment I am doing some research on my dissertation topic, which is on the history and conservation of 'sanitary' wallpapers and I was wondering whether anyone could answer some questions I have about specific treatments: What treatments have you done in the past to reduce discolouration on sanitary wallpapers and what techniques have you used for lining or structural repair? How does the substrate and media react to water; i.e. how does the paper react with water on the surface of the artwork? I am mainly interested in papers/fragments off the wall, but would be interested to know how you go about structural repair and reduction of discolouration to sanitaries in situ? Alternatively I would be interested to know whether treatment to these types of wallpaper is no different from treatment to other types of wallpaper? Any observations you have on these issues would be most helpful.
