Post-doctoral position is available at University of Edinburgh
(School of Engineering) to work on materials characterisation
(including historic materials) using SEM, AFM, optical profilometry,
optical microscopy, XRD, XRF etc.

The position is for 6 months from Jan 2012 with the possibility of
extension. Salary is Grade 7: UKP29972 - UKP35788 and person
specification is:

    The ideal candidate will have the following skills:

        Experimental materials science experience including at least
        one of and preferably two of: atomic force microscopy, X-ray
        methods (XRD, XRF), spectroscopy (Raman, infra-red),
        mechanical testing, particle size analysis, optical
        profilometry, optical microscopy. Excellent written,
        analytical and presentation skills

        Self motivated individual who can liaise with industry,
        design experiments and analyse data.

        Ability to work independently

        PhD or equivalent experience in a physical science,
        including archaeological science.

Desirable skills

    Experience providing service analysis and reporting the results
    or experience within industry/non-University public sector.

    Experience of rheometry.

    Experience using optical profilometry

    Experience characterising minerals and/or alteration of historic
    materials.

Duties and Responsibilities of Post

    Organise your own work and time in order to progress the
    research project

    Keep your line manager and other relevant individuals informed
    of progress.

    The hours of work are 35 per week. However a degree of
    flexibility is required and additional hours may occasionally be
    required.

    Flexibility to travel for meeting clients.

As part of a Research Staff member's career and professional
development as an early career academic, the School has the
expectation that the appointee with undertake some limited teaching
duties. Not only is teaching experience valuable in developing
communication skills, but it leads to a deeper understanding of the
subject area.
