The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary seeks a part-time
paper conservator to survey, prepare, and perform minor treatment on
manuscripts for digitization and to supervise manuscripts in need of
conservation assistance during digitization. This is a part-time,
grant funded, 25% position for 15 months reporting to the Senior
Conservator.

The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary holds the foremost
collection of Judaica and Hebraica in the Western Hemisphere. With a
collection of 400,000 volumes including 11,000 Hebrew manuscript
codices, more than 25,000 rare books, 35,000 Geniza fragments, 6,000
broadsides, prints, approximately 10,000 lineal feet of archival
documents, other ephemeral materials and ever-growing digital
collections. The Library serves the students and faculty of the
institution in addition to the international community of scholars
in Jewish studies and related areas. Please visit

Specific duties and responsibilities: This is a part-time (25%)
position to perform minor treatment of selected manuscripts in
preparation for digitization. Train digitization staff in handling
of manuscripts. Troubleshoot handling problems found while
digitizing the manuscripts. Survey illuminated manuscripts for
digital readiness.

Requirements: Excellent organizational and team-work skills; ability
to initiate and adapt to change including flexible scheduling and to
work collaboratively.  Excellent oral and written communication
skills, including demonstrated ability to document treatments, and
prepare reports.

Educational Requirements: Graduate degree in conservation with a
specialty in paper conservation.  Experience in treating and working
with paper and parchment.   Familiarity with European and Semitic
languages is a plus.
