Summer Work Project Opportunities
Indianapolis Museum of Art

Both the Textile Conservation and Objects and Variable Art
Conservation Labs at the IMA have openings for advanced conservation
interns during the summer of 2012.

The Textile Conservation Lab

The Textile Conservation Lab is seeking a conservation graduate
student to assist with preventive conservation and treatment of
Alexander Girard textiles at the Eero Saarinen designed Miller
House in Columbus, Indiana. Commissioned in 1953 this modernist
house showcases the collaborative work of architect Eero
Saarinen, interior designer Alexander Girard and landscape
architect Dan Kiley. This summer opportunity will focus on
researching and treating Alexander Girard designed and/or
selected textiles, particularly the window coverings. Treatment
activities will encompass tide line reduction and repair for
many of the window coverings. The intern will also assist with
the development and implementation of a preventive conservation
strategy to mitigate light exposure throughout the house.
Depending upon interest, specialization, and experience, the
intern will focus on specific aspects of developing a preventive
conservation plan, such as designing and fabricating housings
for vulnerable artworks, assessing the viability of innovative
housing materials, or researching alternative options. For
additional information about this summer placement opportunity

Objects and Variable Art Conservation Lab

The Objects and Variable Art Conservation Lab is seeking a
conservation graduate student to work directly with the objects
conservators. This full-time, 8-12 week summer internship will
involve helping to complete a survey of objects in the IMA's
African collection to determine their condition and make
recommendations for the rehousing and treatment of the
artifacts. Custom housings will be created for selected objects,
as determined by the survey. The intern will also participate
in the research, documentation, and maintenance of selected
outdoor sculptures on the IMA campus. Additional projects may
be assigned as available. Candidates should be enrolled in a
master's degree program in art conservation and have a
specialization in objects conservation. The intern must be
self-motivated, independent, willing to work outdoors and to
collaborate with other departments. An interest in writing and
utilizing social media to communicate outside the IMA about the
internship activities is preferred. For additional information
about this summer placement opportunity contact:

science laboratory is now on-line.

More About the Indianapolis Museum of Art: Encompassing 152 acres of
gardens and grounds, the Indianapolis Museum of Art is among the 10
largest encyclopedic art museums in the United States and features
significant collections of African, American, Asian, European, and
contemporary art, as well as a newly established collection of
design arts. The IMA offers visitors an expansive view of arts and
culture through its collection of more than 54,000 works of art that
span 5,000 years of history from across the world's continents. The
collections include paintings, sculpture, furniture and design
objects, prints, drawings, and photographs, as well as textiles and
costumes.

Additionally, art, design, and nature are featured at 100 Acres: The
Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park and Oldfields-Lilly House
and Gardens, a historic Country Place Era estate on the IMA grounds.
Beyond the Indianapolis campus, in May 2011 the IMA opened to the
public the recently acquired landmark Miller House and Garden in
Columbus, Indiana. One of the country's most highly regarded
examples of mid-century Modernist residences; the Miller House was
designed by Eero Saarinen, with interiors by Alexander Girard and
landscape design by Dan Kiley.

Recognizing the IMA's positive impact on its community, the Museum
was named a 2009 National Medal for Museum and Library Services -
the nation's highest honor for museums and libraries. The IMA's
commitment to free general admission, programming for schools and
teachers, environmental leadership, and online initiatives were
among cited community contributions in the Museum's selection for
the award.
