Subject: Masterclass on adhesives, coatings and consolidants
Masterclass: Adhesives, Consolidants and Coatings SRAL Avenue Ceramique 224 6221 KX, Maastricht 28-30 March 2012 (3 full time days) Instructor: Velson Horie (BSc, FMA, FIIC, ACR, MAPM) is a Collection Care and Conservation Consultant <URL:http://www.horie.co.uk> Participants are requested to be at the SRAL studios at 09.30 each morning. SRAL is situated next to the Bonnefanten Museum, c. 15 minutes walk from the train station. Overview: Conservators use materials on their objects all the time. Why do you use the materials you use? What criteria do you use in making those choices? Is the choice based on evidence, familiarity, or custom and practice? This Masterclass examines the existing evidence, develops practical experience with materials' properties, and tests custom and practice. The course is evenly split between practical sessions working with materials and the theoretical background needed to understand their properties. The role and merits of both high technology studies and investigations in a conservation studio are investigated. Participants can bring and share their individual problems as object lessons to be examined by the group, always a productive process. Over the last 25 years SRAL has grown to become a National and International Institute with departments for the Conservation of Paintings (Panel and Canvas), Polychrome Sculpture, Paper, Contemporary Art and Historic Interiors. The Institute also provides internship placements for recent graduates and houses the Post-Graduate training of young conservators from the University of Amsterdam in each department. The Institute's well equipped studios are spacious and houses a team of over twenty conservators and educators, in addition to the Post-Graduate students and interns. Staff members work on site focusing on collection care, and conserving painted decorations of historic interiors. Furthermore, the SRAL laboratory has the facilities to analyse historic painting materials and carry out technical studies of art works. *** Conservation DistList Instance 25:23 Distributed: Sunday, November 6, 2011 Message Id: cdl-25-23-009 ***Received on Saturday, 5 November, 2011
