Assistant Project Conservators (2 positions) American Research Center in Egypt (ARCE), based in Luxor Contract Positions: approximately January 1, 2012 - June 30, 2012 with the possibility of an additional season from the Fall 2012 - June 30, 2013 Conservation of Tomb 110 ARCE is seeking an assistant project conservator to join the conservation team based in Luxor, Egypt. The position involves an advanced training program for Egyptian conservators and collaborative work on the excavation and conservation of a tomb in South Assasif, Luxor. Tomb #110 is that of Djehuti, the Royal Butler to Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III of the 18th Dynasty. The assistant project conservator position is full-time and he/she will report to ARCE's Chief Conservator and Associate Director in Luxor. The assistant project conservator will have a wide range of duties which includes, but is not limited to, the following: Assist the Associate Director and Chief Conservator in the training and supervisory aspects of the ongoing conservation work, including but not limited to classroom instruction and translation, practical conservation and training and other projects as needed. Be present during the initial excavation of Tomb 110 and cooperate with the archaeologists who will be excavating the tomb.--Advise archaeologists and Egyptologists on any immediate conservation needs. Encourage ongoing cooperation between the archaeologists and conservators working on the project. Manage a team of Egyptian conservators with a range of practical ability. Assess structural stabilization needs for the tomb and implement the necessary measures.--Coordinate with the Associate Director and Chief Conservator in documenting, photographing, mapping and cataloging the ongoing conservation work Coordinate with the Associate Director and Chief Conservator for ordering, inventorying and storage of the materials associated with the projects. Perform or assist in the preparation of condition, progress reports and final reports. Conduct or assist in research. Implement or assist with associated project activities. Perform other duties as assigned. Necessary Qualifications: A master's degree from a recognized conservation training program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience Experience in stone, plaster and wall painting conservation Previous conservation experience working in the field Previous experience supervising a team of conservators Advanced examination, treatment, research, writing, documentation, and computer skills Knowledge of basic health and safety measures Good communication skills Ability to work well with others Ability to discuss and coordinate decisions with the ARCE conservation staff and Egyptians working on the project Respect and patience for cultural differences Ability to be physically mobile (climb scaffolding, etc.) and lift equipment and materials necessary for the conservation work Conservation of The Temple of Isis Deir El Shelwit ARCE is seeking an assistant project conservator to join the conservation team based in Luxor, Egypt. The position involves an advanced training program for Egyptian conservators and collaborative work on the conservation of the Temple of Isis at Deir el Shelwit in Luxor. The Temple Complex was possibly started during the XXX th Dynasty and the Temple of Isis dates to the reigns of Roman emperors Hadrian and Antoninus Pius (117-161 AD). The assistant project conservator positions are full-time and he/she will report to ARCE's Chief Conservator and Associate Director in Luxor. The assistant project conservators will have a wide range of duties which include, but are not limited to, the following: Assist the Associate Director and Chief Conservator in the training and supervisory aspects of the ongoing conservation work, including but not limited to classroom instruction and translation, practical conservation and training and other projects as needed. Cooperate with a second assistant project conservator for the work in the Temple. Develop a conservation work plan and schedule based on some initial testing that was conducted in the Temple of Isis during the fall of 2011. Manage a team of Egyptian conservators with a range of practical ability. Coordinate with the Associate Director and Chief Conservator in documenting, photographing, mapping and cataloging the ongoing conservation work. Coordinate with the Associate Director and Chief Conservator for ordering, inventorying and storage of the materials associated with the project.
