This is a request for suggestions, information and knowledge. The
paintings restoration staff of Heritage Malta is presently working
on a Victor Pasmore painting. The painting was executed between 1985
and 1995 in Malta. As is usual for this period, Victor Pasmore used
different techniques such as acrylic paints and fluorescent spray
paints. He then added geometrical shapes and curved lines (that
incorporate the artist's initials) to the main composition formed by
the sprayed paint. This painting has never been stretched on a frame
but was hung on the wall for some years in the artist's studio. It
was detached and rolled a few weeks before his death. The painting
is very degraded with a lot of deformations, flakes, tears, etc in
the cotton canvas support. The restoration presents a lot of
challenges.

This project is being carried out at the Conservation Division of
Heritage Malta with the scientific assistance from CICRP (Marseille)
which has started some studies about fluorescent paints.

Can anyone help in answering the following questions:

According to John Pasmore (son), his father used to paint on loose
canvas and then sent it rolled to the galleries who used to stretch
on a stretcher frame themselves. Can confirm this?

Were all the paintings on canvas stretched on a stretcher frame? Do
you know of any exceptions? Do you have any details of the types of
stretcher frames that were used? Do you have any photographs of the
types of stretchers used?

Can you tell us if Victor Pasmore used to make any demands
concerning the display of his paintings? If so, could you describe
these?

Do you know of any other restoration projects on a Victor Pasmore
painting? If so, could you tell us where the restoration was carried
out and by whom?

We would be very grateful if you could also suggest some other
contacts that might be of help in the conservation and restoration
of this Pasmore painting.

If you can offer any information regarding Victor Pasmore's
paintings your contribution and professional experience would be
very useful and valuable to optimize our choice for the restoration
process.
