Subject: Asbestos
The recent bombing of the government quarter in Oslo caused asbestos contamination in some of the buildings. Artifacts had to be removed as fast as possible; specialists were called in together with conservators to evacuate the art works on loan from various museums and organisations. After initial decontamination in an appropriate room, we received a tapestry by Hannah Ryggen--made in the 1960s, 400cm long, 45 cm wide, now sealed in plastic--back from the site. Has anyone experience with asbestos contamination in textiles, the measuring of possible residue adherent to wool fibres, and subsequent treatment? In other words, how can we make sure that all the asbestos is removed so that we can safely handle and display this art work by one of Norway's most treasured weavers?
