Universita degli Studi di Trento, Italy

The International Doctoral School in Materials Science and
Engineering is seeking a PhD student with a background in
Conservation Sciences and Material Science (in particular Polymeric
Science) carrying out research in the area of "Materials and
technologies for cultural heritage" on the development of new
nanostructured polymeric materials for cultural heritage
conservation and restoration.

A preliminary research program is the following:

The research will be focused on the development of new polymeric
nanostructured materials for the protection and restoration of
canvas painting.

The first steps will be the assessment of the microclimatic
conditions that develop between the front and back of a canvas
painting under changing environmental conditions. This activity will
involve the assessment of a painting placed in a church, as a
typical exhibition environment.

This preliminary results will be used for the design and development
of new organic nanostructured materials able to provide some
improvement to the stabilisation and conservation of the painting
and with a possible use for canvas restoration.

The final step of the research will be the implementation and
verification of the effectiveness of the new materials under
changing environmental conditions according to well defined
procedures.

The PhD program lasts three years.

The candidate will have a Master in Conservation Sciences, Sciences
for the conservation-restoration of cultural heritage, Sciences and
Materials for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Alternatively the
candidate will have a degree in a physical science subject
(chemistry, physics, material science) or Engineering with a focus
or a special interest on cultural heritage conservation
applications.
