The Horniman Museum is offering an excellent opportunity for an
experienced and enthusiastic individual to work on the conservation
and assessment of objects from the Oceanic collections as part of a
Renaissance funded project.

The post is based in the Collections Conservation and Care Section
which is responsible for the conservation and care of the Museum's
collections of Ethnography, Musical instruments and Natural History.
The post will be based mainly at the Study Collections Centre at
North Greenwich.

The post holder should have a recognized qualification in objects
conservation. Applicants should have a good range of experience
which encompasses the care, documentation and conservation of a wide
range of organic and inorganic objects in a museum environment.

Job Description: Conservator (Renaissance Oceania Collections
Review)

Responsible to: Head of Collections Conservation and Care

Duration of Contract: up to 18 weeks to be completed before 31 March
2012

Liaises with: Staff of the Collections Conservation and Care
Section, Curator for Oceania Project, Collections Management, and
Documentation Sections. Curatorial and other staff within the
Museum.

Location: The post will be based at the Study Collections Centre at
North Greenwich

Project Teamwork: The Museum is committed to a flexible, teamwork
approach to project management across a wide range of activities.

Salary: UKP25,203 per annum pro rata

Main Purpose of Job: To assist the Head of Collections Conservation
and Care with conservation and assessments of objects as part of the
Renaissance Oceania Collections Review

Main Responsibilities: As a member of an inter-sectional team
working on the Project, your responsibilities will be to:

    Use the collections management system (MIMSY xg) for documenting
    the condition of objects, also determining treatment priorities
    and conservation time according to set procedures, and in
    liaison with other project team members

    Carry out identification of materials associated with the
    collection as required.

    Prepare and conserve selected objects for collections on-line,
    and for display if required.

    Advise Oceania project team staff on the proper handling and
    packing of objects.

    Liaise with Photographer (Documentation) to ensure objects are
    photographed appropriately.

    Be able to identify pest infestations associated with the
    collection.

    Carry out safe manual handling duties.

Person Specification

   A recognised qualification in objects conservation

   Proven experience in the care, documentation and treatment of a
   wide range of materials and objects in a museum environment.

   Computer literate with PC database experience, keyboard skills
   and an ability to input data accurately and consistently.

   Proven ability and experience in storage and proper housing of
   mixed collections.

   Proven ability to understand safe working practices particularly
   in relation to H&S at work regulations and COSHH

   Ability and willingness to carry out safe manual handling duties.

   Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team, but also to
   show proven ability to work independently, without close
   supervision, and to within tight deadlines
