The Metropolitan Museum of Art has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral fellow to participate in a collaborative project with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of Delaware, and funded by the Cultural Heritage Science Program of the National Science Foundation. The project involves making and characterizing model compounds and systems related to the stability of oil paintings, primarily using solid state 13C and 207Pb NMR spectroscopy, as well as other techniques, to identify reactions of lead-containing pigments with the polymer matrix. The successful candidate must be experienced in solid-state NMR spectroscopy (triple-resonance methods, REDOR, and SEDOR, for example) and have an interest in conservation/cultural heritage issues. He/she will be part of an interdisciplinary team, and will provide the bridge between analytical science and the cultural heritage/conservation community.
