The Metropolitan Museum of Art has an immediate opening for a
postdoctoral fellow to participate in a collaborative project with
the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of
Delaware, and funded by the Cultural Heritage Science Program of the
National Science Foundation. The project involves making and
characterizing model compounds and systems related to the stability
of oil paintings, primarily using solid state 13C and 207Pb NMR
spectroscopy, as well as other techniques, to identify reactions of
lead-containing pigments with the polymer matrix.

The successful candidate must be experienced in solid-state NMR
spectroscopy (triple-resonance methods, REDOR, and SEDOR, for
example) and have an interest in conservation/cultural heritage
issues. He/she will be part of an interdisciplinary team, and will
provide the bridge between analytical science and the cultural
heritage/conservation community. The position is initially for one
year, with the possibility of funding for up to two additional
years. The initial salary is $40,000 per year plus benefits.

The successful candidate will be primarily based at the Department
of Scientific Research at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, but will
carry out NMR work at the University of Delaware on a regular basis.
(Travel and accommodation costs for the work at the University of
Delaware will be covered by grant funds.) He/she will be expected to
integrate into both parts of the program.
