Subject: Paper from archaeological site
At the Pole d'Archeologie Interdepartemental Rhenan (PAIR) in Selestat (archaeological trust in Alsace, France), we are presently dealing with a preventive excavation of a World War I German gallery in which a lot of organic materials artefacts are found. Among these artefacts are several military personal records that have been buried in a damp clay soil. The paper is now wet but not really damp, light brown and breaks easily when manipulated. We are searching for advice from people having been through similar experiences with archaeological papers, for the storage and conditioning of such objects until the conservation project can be launched. And we also would like to know if possible what kind of treatments and results can be expected for such papers.
