Position at Science Museum, London

From: Duggan Emma <emma.duggan<-a>
Date: Thursday, September 29, 2011
Collections Assistant (Storage Compression Project)
Science Museum, London

Salary UKP15,000 to UKP16,000 per annum pro-rata depending on
knowledge and skills

6 Month Fixed Term Contract

The Storage Compression Project will enable the compacting, and
rationalising where possible, of the collections stored at Blythe
House. It will ensure that the objects are stored in an environment
appropriate to their needs, create an effective use of space,
improve security and allow for storage furniture improvements.

A large scale programme of gallery decants are proposed from 2012
onwards and so space is needed to store and continue to make the
objects accessible for study and research. The project entails the
decanting of specified rooms to allow for repairs, environmental
upgrades and racking installation to create effective storage.

You'll be based at Blythe House, the small to medium objects store
of the Science Museum with occasional need to work at either the
storage buildings at Science Museum Wroughton or South Kensington
site.

An aspect of this work will be working with Curators and
Conservation and Collection Care colleagues across sites to ensure
the safe and secure movement of large selected objects from Blythe
House to the storage facility at Wroughton.

You will plan and undertake the safe handling and movement of a wide
range of materials, sizes and conditions which may be either
palletised or moved individually, using a variety of lifting and
manual handling equipment, from Blythe House to Wroughton using our
Collections Care logistics team, in line with established
professional standards and protocols.

You will work alongside core Conservation and Collection Care teams
to prioritise, manage and document the movement and final storage,
and you will provide up to date location changes within MIMSY XG
collections database and communicate all moves to teams on both
sites in advance.
