Guest Lecturer on Issues in Library and Archives Preservation
Art Conservation Department
Buffalo State College, Buffalo, NY

New, recurring position, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
available Spring Semester, January-May 2012.

The lecturer will be responsible for presenting long-term
preservation concerns of library and archive collections to graduate
students in paper and rare book conservation, advise us on our
enhanced library and archive conservation program, and participate
in mentoring students in the library and archive specialty.

Lecturer would travel to Buffalo once each spring semester to
lecture and lead two one-day seminars during each visit, in a
two-year rotation. Typically, a lecture of 1-1-2 hours is followed
by a three-hour lab or studio exercise. These are scheduled on a
Thursday-Friday at the lecturer's convenience. Although the
lecturer will have considerable leeway in the presentations, the
goal of the lecturer must be to augment the current rotating lecture
and workshop series on library preservation issues. The current
series cover collection management and preservation of Audio and
Video Materials in Library Collections, and Emergency Planning and
Disaster Response for Library and Archives Collections. Important
topics the lecturer might cover include library institutional
structure, resource management, conservation decisions for
circulating collections, and a conservator's place in the library.

Buffalo State already has a strong paper conservation and rare book
conservation curricula with material of specific interest to library
and archives collections conservators. Conservation treatment,
ethics and standards of practice are stressed.

The Preservation lecturer will have full access to our paper lab and
the support of all the faculty, including our scientists and imaging
specialist, for analysis, research and projects. We have the
ability to augment our materials and supplies as the lecturer
wishes. Local public and research libraries are willing to
participate in informational visits.

We are a congenial full-time faculty that shares a commitment to
providing the best instruction possible to our students, and we want
to continue our success in graduating respected conservators for
important cultural institutions, including libraries and archives.
We welcome letters of interest in this important position from
Preservation Librarians or Administrators who have a passion for
conservation, experience in lecturing or teaching, and an easy
manner with students.

Compensation includes honorarium, plus travel, accommodations and
expenses.
