Agency Mission and Description Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department is an umbrella agency which oversees the Museum of New Mexico system (Palace of the Governors, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of International Folk Art, Museum of Indian Arts and Culture), New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo, New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque, New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces, National Hispanic Cultural Center, State Library, New Mexico Arts and Historic Preservation Division and the Division of State Monuments consisting of eight (8) monuments located in various parts of the state. Purpose of Position: Under the supervision of the Chief Conservator, this position is responsible to carry out a full and holistic conservation condition survey of 5,300 ceramics in the keeping of Museum of Indian Arts and Culture/Lab of Anthropology. Resulting documentation and summary report is essential in assessing previous reconstructions, current conditions and to determine the required scope of treatment and appropriate packing to safely move the collections to a new facility. Educational requirements: A Master's Degree in Object Conservation is required for this position. Experience: Three (3) years experience treating and working with history collections is required for this position. Employment Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Reference check and Driver's License verification are required and employment is conditional pending results. (Please note that a current driver's license valid for use in New Mexico is sufficient) Supplemental Skills/Abilities: The following are not required to qualify for this position, but are preferred: Suitable knowledge and experience with Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry Chemical analysis Portable X-Ray fluorescence analysis Condition Surveys Rehousing methodologies and moving collections Conservation and museum database, image processing and capture software Bargaining Unit Position: This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to. Working Environment: Work is performed both in an office setting and in a lab setting with exposure to analytical equipment and photography, exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Lifting, sitting/standing for extended periods of time may be required.
