The internationally recognised Centre for Sustainable Heritage is
seeking a research associate, Carrying out excellent research on the
AHRC/EPSRC Science and Heritage Programme project Heritage Smells!,
working with research teams and heritage stakeholders, writing
reports and publishing and disseminating research results. This is a
full time position, funding has been identified for 22 months.

Heritage Smells! is an exciting interdisciplinary project looking at
emissions of volatile compounds from heritage materials and objects,
particularly historic paper and plastic materials and
pesticide-treated objects, with a view to develop non-destructive
identification and condition assessment methods.

The appointee will develop and implement methods to analyse
emissions of volatile organic compounds from heritage objects, using
gas chromatography and various mass spectrometric techniques,
develop qualitative and quantitative multivariate analysis methods
to interpret chromatographic and spectrometric data, develop
theoretical and practical understanding of the emissions as a
consequence of degradation of historic paper and synthetic
materials, adapt, or modify, existing analytical instrumentation or
methods to work with extremely small samples, and analyses at low
concentration, develop non-destructive sampling methods, develop and
apply methods of analysis in situ, i.e. in heritage collections in
collaboration with heritage organisations.

The appointee will have a PhD (or close to completion) in a related
physical science subject (chemistry, physics, forensic, material
science etc.), demonstrable practical experience with
chromatographic and mass spectrometric analytical methods and of
spectrometric methods of material analysis, demonstrable excellent
knowledge of multivariate data analysis (PCA, PLS, DA) and modelling
using appropriate software tools, such as Matlab, research
experience with cultural heritage materials and a publication track
record.
