Archives New Zealand Preservation Services in Wellington New Zealand
has a vacancy for a suitably qualified Conservator. As the sole
conservator in the Wellington office you will be reporting to the
Manager Preservation Services. You will join a small friendly team
of eight that includes preservation staff in each of our four
regional offices.

Archives New Zealand holds over 80 km of paper records, more than
1.8 million photographs and negatives, over 22 thousand audio visual
records, the National Collection of War Art as well as some of New
Zealand's most significant documents including the Treaty of
Waitangi 1840, Declaration of Independence 1835 and The Women's
Suffrage Petition 1893.

Wellington, the compact harbour capital of New Zealand, and region
has a population of 450,000. Dubbed the 'coolest little capital in
the world' by Lonely Planet, Wellington is known for its abundance
of arts and cultural activities as well as its fantastic culinary
and film scene.

The successful candidate will ensure effective development and
implementation of preservation programmes through:

    Providing preventive and remedial conservation services

    Contributing to the development and operation of the
    Preservation Services facilities

    Providing operational co-ordination with other Archives New
    Zealand functional units, including provision of technical
    support, training and advice

    Providing disaster planning and response services

    Providing consultancy services for central and local government

To be successful in this position you will ideally have:

    A tertiary qualification in the conservation of cultural
    materials

    Professional experience of at least 5 years as a conservator,
    particularly across the broad range of formats in archives
    conservation

    Highly developed manual dexterity

    Excellent communication and self-management skills particularly
    in the areas of advice and delivery of training

The ability and desire to work in a small team and with limited
supervision
