Masterclass
"Historical silver plating: art history, technology,
    science and conservation"
Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (RMA)
November 28 - December 2, 2011

The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (RMA), in conjunction with the University
of Amsterdam (UvA) and the Netherlands Cultural Heritage Agency
(RCE) is pleased to announce the master class 'Historical silver
plating: art history, technology, science and conservation'.

This master class in technical art history will run from November
28-December 2, 2011 and is made possible with generous support from
the Migelien Gerritzen foundation. The course will look at silver
plating on post-medieval metal objects. The master class will
consist of lectures as well as hands on practical sessions whereby
the participants can make their own samples of silver plating.

Preliminary outline of this course is as follows:

    Monday morning 28 November 2011
    10am

        Introduction: Robert van Langh (RMA)

Content: Examination of the objects, positioning the object
in a historical context use of French plating, close
plating, Sheffield plating, electroplating techniques and
        depletion silvering.

Lecturer: Dr Angus Patterson, curator (V&A)

    Monday afternoon 28 November 2011

First part of practical reconstruction of the following
techniques: French plating, close plating, fused plating
        (Sheffield plating), electrochemical replacement silvering
(silvering pastes), electroplating techniques and depletion
silvering. Participants will execute the techniques
        themselves.

        Lecturer: Tonny Beentjes, lecturer/conservator (UvA)

Tuesday morning and afternoon 29 November 2011

Practical session: Second part of practical reconstruction

Wednesday morning and afternoon 30 November 2011
    Theoretical session

Lectures on diffusion of metals, explanation of the solid
state diffusion, theoretical elements explained in regard to
the techniques used. The use of analytical techniques to
        examine these kinds of objects.

Lecturers: Dr. Jennifer Mass, Head of Science department
Winterthur Museums, Tonny Beentjes, and Jolanda van Iperen
        (RMA, UvA, RCE)

Thursday morning and afternoon 1 December
    Practical and theoretical session:

Cleaning techniques of plated objects. Mechanical, chemical
        and electrochemical.

Lecturers: Dr. Jennifer Mass, Tonny Beentjes

    Friday morning 2 December 2011

Content: evaluation of the use of cleaning techniques and
        the microscopical/chemical effects, using analytical
        techniques.

        Lecturer: Dr. Jennifer Mass

    Friday afternoon 2 December 2011

Content: preventive conservation of silver, what is the role
of climate control and which possibilities do we have,
        taking risk assessment in consideration.

Lecturers: Dr. Jennifer Mass, Tonny Beentjes

Participants: People in the field of metal conservation are invited
to apply for this master class. Selection will take place based on a
letter of motivation required from all participants (minimum 100,
maximum 400 words). Applications should be send to Apas Zwart
<a.zwart<-a t->Rijksmuseum< . >nl>

A maximum of 10 participants can join in the practical part of the
master class. More participants can join on the theoretical parts. A
maximum of one person per institute can take part in this
masterclass.

The fee for this masterclass will be Euro300,
(coffee, tea, lunch provided, including farewell dinner and
materials)
