Bosses and Clasps I, II and III
European Research Centre for Book and Paper Conservation-Restoration

A new series of further education courses (they can be selected
separately or 2 of them or all 3):

Bosses and Clasps I
Metal Working
3-7 October 2011
Horn

Lecturer: Prof. Hartwig Ullrich

The course aim is to enable both the book conservator and
students in the field to treat and use the metals used for book
furnishing properly. The idea for the course roots in the
observation by Prof. Ullrich, that even skilled book
conservators do not handle the metals properly. During the
course the metals used for bosses and clasps are cut, polished
    and shaped.

The metals used for bosses on books however are
also found on other historical works of art, such as
furniture and ethnographic cultural heritage. Thus
also conservators responsible for such collections, but
also students in metal conservation are welcome to
    participate.

As soon as subscription is completes, further information on
tools to bring along will be sent.

General language will be German, however also those who cannot
speak German are welcome, as about practical performance can
    bridge the language skills.

The course fee is 1,200.- Euros plus 10% VAT. Number of
    participants is limited to 8.

Bosses and Clasps II:
Making copies of clasps and how to install them on the book
10-14 October 2011
Horn

Lecturers: DI Manfred Mayer and Reinhard Erlacher

The course aim to give skills in how to make copies of clasps in
case the original ones are lost. To fix them on the book is the
second part of the task. Not only the technical skills are used
to come close to a historical furnishing but the ethics of
conservation are applied very well too. The idea of minimal
intervention in book conservation is discussed.

Participants should be able to handle the metals properly and
have at least basic understanding of the today's
    conservator-restorers approach to conservation-restoration
(E.C.C.O. professional guidelines). The Piarist Library with its
manifold of historical books can serve as study source.

General language will be German and English. The

course fee is 760.- Euros plus 10% VAT. Number of participants
    is limited to 8.

Furthermore examples of the damages are shown and explained and
a brief introduction on how to react to them in the course of
conservation are outlined. The Piarist Library with its manifold
of historical books can serve as study source.
