Subject: Conference: Paper from the East
Paper from the East Second Chinese Heritage Conference National Maritime Museum Greenwich London Friday 7 October 2011 9 am - 5.15pm Paper From The East is the second of an influential conference series concerning Chinese heritage, bringing together specialists in paper conservation and materials research from museums and galleries around the world. This year, staged at the National Maritime Museum and sponsored by Tru Vue, Paper From The East is designed to promote both academic and practical practice and is part of the wider activity surrounding the launch of the new 'Traders: the East India Company and Asia' gallery. Western collections and many of our national galleries and museums hold objects made from a wide variety of "papers" including painting and objects d'art and their conservation depends on understanding the paper properties. Paper From The East provides a rare opportunity to learn about the diverse paper from Korea, China and Japan, how they were used originally and how they have been adapted for use outside their places of origin. The conference includes talks from conservation specialists from the British Museum, National Maritime Museum, Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts and the V&A covering a range of topics including traditional Japanese and Islamic paper making and the famous Dunhuang Manuscripts paper analysis (full programme attached). The conference will be essential for all those who care for or use oriental papers, whether as art or in manuscripts, in private or public hands. However, those interested in maritime history particularly the trade between Asia and Europe will also be attracted to the opportunity to learn form and meet respected scholars and experts in this area.
