The Museum of Islamic Art, Doha - Qatar, opened to great acclaim in
December 2008 it houses one of the world's most distinguished and
important collections of Islamic art ranging from Spain to Central
Asia and India, dating from the 7th to the 19th centuries, and
encompassing arts of all kinds. Particularly important are the
collections of early Qurans and other manuscripts, inlaid metalwork,
carpets and textiles.

The Museum is seeking a full-time textile conservator to work as
part of the Museum's Collection Division.  Conservators report
directly to the Head of Conservation and will be part of a small,
highly motivated team dedicated to preserving and promoting the
Museum's collections. The work will include assessing, conserving
and caring for the collections both on display and in store. You
will be part of an interdisciplinary team of conservators and will
be expected to help in other areas of the department.

The Collections Division, includes the Exhibitions and Loans,
Registrar, Conservation and Curatorial Departments, and is
responsible for the display and safe-keeping of the collections and
their documentation.  The Collections Division is managed by the
Deputy Director Collections, who reports directly to the Director of
the Museum.

Responsibilities include:

    Interventive and preventive Conservation of the Museum's
    textile, costume and carpet collection

    To examine, document and assess the current condition of the
    textile collection, carrying out a condition survey and
    prioritise objects for treatment.

    To care for the textile collections physical integrity in
    exhibition and storage

    Liaising with museum curators and other colleagues concerning
    the textile collection

    Assisting with day to day running of the laboratory

    Assisting with setting up exhibitions and rotation of objects on
    permanent display

    Packing objects for transport and accompanying objects in
    transit to other locations if required

    Assisting with organizing the logistics of long term projects
    and collaborating with other conservators.

    Assisting with advocacy and outreach

    Any other activity as required by the Head of Conservation.

Requirements

    A recognized degree in conservation and a minimum of 5 years
    work experience of Middle Eastern/Islamic collections.

    Experience of working within a museum.

    Must be computer literate, a working knowledge of museum
    databases is desirable.

    Familiarity with condition surveys and the ability to undertake
    same.

    Ability to work within a team, to collaborate with other
    conservators and departmental and museum staff.

    Be flexible and also self motivated.

    Fluent in English, knowledge of Arabic would be an advantage

    Excellent communication skills and written skills
