The New York Botanical Garden

The New York Botanical Garden, a National Historic Landmark and one
of NYC's premier cultural institutions, seeks a full-time
Conservator to join their Library. The Conservator participates in
all preservation and conservation activities carried out by the
department to protect and conserve Library and Archives collection
materials. Prepares and installs exhibition of library materials for
the Rondina-LoFaro Gallery and Rare Book Room displays. Assist the
Conservation Librarian/Conservator in all departmental efforts.

    Examines, analyses and performs both basic and advanced
    treatments and housing on a wide variety of materials including
    printed books, pamphlets, manuscript, and architectural drawings
    and reproductions, in accordance with AIC guidelines.

    Works closely with the Conservation Librarian/Conservator in all
    departmental efforts, including environmental monitoring,
    integrated pest management, emergency response plan, educational
    programs, and preservation surveys, exhibits and preservation
    policies.

    Responsible for the installation of new materials for the
    Rondina-LoFaro Gallery and Rare Book Room display, in
    coordination with Library's Exhibition Coordinator.

    Advises on preservation/conservation requirements of items to be
    exhibited or loaned; reviews materials and performs treatments;
    performs condition reports on all incoming and outgoing
    exhibition items.

    Constructs and/or assembles mounts and mats for materials going
    on exhibit.

    Coordinates conservation and other exhibition services with
    vendors; lighting designers; fabricators, etc.

    Helps develop, manage, and implement collection-level projects;
    prepares condition assessments, conducts surveys, and assists in
    setting priorities for treatment.

    Assists prepare grants; supervises and participates in grant
    project tasks.

    Assists with supervision and training of staff and with
    Internship Program.

    Maintains laboratory equipment, supplies and statistics;
    researches and recommends laboratory equipment and supplies as
    well as conservation policies, procedures and methods.

    Represents the Library through participation in local and
    national conferences and professional organizations.

Requirements: Master's degree from an accredited training program in
conservation or equivalent combination of education and training in
book and paper conservation. Accredited MLS degree preferred.  At
least three (3) years work experience post-internship in a
conservation program, preferably in a research library.  Thorough
knowledge of book and paper history, materials and technology.
Advanced skills in performing intermediate to complex conservation
treatment on a wide range of library and archival materials, as
demonstrated by a portfolio.  Ability to work independently and with
staff at all levels in a collegial and flexible environment.
Effective communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated computer and related technology skills. Experience in
exhibit installation; project planning, management, and supervision
of staff preferred.
