The National Heritage Board (NHB)

The National Heritage Board (NHB) preserves, presents and promotes
the cultural heritage of Singapore. Our vision is to make heritage
an enriching part of everyone's life. The Heritage Conservation
Centre (HCC) is a purpose-built facility for the storage and
conservation of all artefacts under the care of the National
Heritage Board (NHB) of Singapore. We are now seeking candidates for
the following positions:

    Conservator (Objects)
    Conservator (Textiles)

Job Description: The main responsibilities are:

    Undertake examination, assess conservation requirements, carry
    out full documentation and treatment of objects from the NHB
    collections

    Extensive practical work on a variety of objects for exhibition
    and storage needs;

    Provide close supervision and coaching of direct and indirect
    reportees.

    Performs conservation analysis and tests in contributing to the
    preservation and conservation knowledge of the NHB collections

    May need to manage and/or implement preventive conservation
    projects, including environmental monitoring and pest management
    relating to collections care in storage, on loan and on display;
    (may not be necessary)

    May be involved in liaising for exhibition and participate in
    gallery development

    May be involved in the conservation study or research projects
    undertaken by the Objects/Textiles Conservation Section

Brief Description of Collection Involved: At HCC, Conservation
Services Department deals with the nation's collections of the
following museums under National Heritage Board, namely the National
Museum of Singapore, Singapore Arts Museum, Asian Civilisations
Museum, The Peranakan Museum, Malay Heritage Centre, Sun Yat Seng
Nanyang Memorial Hall and the inaugurals of The National Gallery of
Singapore and Indian Heritage Centre.

As Textiles Conservator, you will be presented with the opportunity
to conserve a diverse collection of textile from Southeast Asia and
Asia while coordinating preventive conservation projects and
participate in exhibition planning teams of the National Museum of
Singapore, Asian Civilisations Museum, Peranakan Museum and
Singapore Art Museum / 8Q.

While the Objects Conservation Section mainly deals artworks and
artefacts that the Objects Conservation Section deals with are
mainly from the collection of the National Museum of Singapore,
Asian Civilisations Museum, The Peranakan Museums and Singapore Art
Museum / 8Q, which broadly include historic, cultural, ethnographic,
modern and contemporary artwork materials. The range of materials
that an Objects Conservator can expect to come in contact with
ranges from inorganic materials like stone, glass, metal, ceramics
to organic in nature, like wood, plant fibres, plastics and mixed
composite materials.

Work Location and Arrangement: The conservator shall mostly be based
at HCC at 32 Jurong Port Road. The Conservation Services Department
is made up of 4 Conservation Sections, namely Paper, Paintings,
Textiles and Objects. The conservator shall be working in the
Objects/Textiles Conservation Section in HCC. The Centre encourages
cross disciplinary interaction hence the Conservators are encouraged
to leverage on the other areas of expertise that are currently in
HCC to enhance the conservation decision-making process.

Qualifications and Other Requirements:

    Candidate should have a recognized first degree (bachelor's or
    honours) or a Masters degree in Objects or Textiles
    Conservation, with 6 to 8 years of relevant practical
    experience. Institutional/public experience is preferred.

    Familiarity and experience with cultural materials in South East
    Asia, as well as modern and contemporary installation art will
    be advantageous for applicant for Objects Conservator.

    Ability to carry out comprehensive treatments on a broad range
    of materials with high degree of manual dexterity and aesthetic
    sensitivity.

    Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.

    Possess initiative with ability to multi-task, organise and
    prioritise work in given timeline.

    Positive attitude, a strong team player who can share and also
    work independently when required

    Ability and experience to coach and impart conservation skills
    and knowledge effectively.

    Possess a wide exposure in handling multi-cultural materials
    with sensitivity and demonstrate relevance in making sound
    contextual judgements in applying conservation principles and
    practices.

    Ability to work under minimal supervision as well as being a
    cooperative member of staff

    Ability to adapt in a multi-lingual and multi-racial
    environment.

    Keep up to date with the latest conservation development through
    research and training. Evidence of continual professional
    development is strongly desirable.
