Position at the Hamilton Kerr Institute

From: Linda Brooklyn <lmb26<-a>
Date: Wednesday, July 27, 2011
Senior Conservator of Easel Paintings
The Hamilton Kerr Institute

Salary: UKP32,751 - UKP44,016

Closing date for applications: 9 September 2011

The Hamilton Kerr Institute for conservation of easel paintings is a
department of the Fitzwilliam Museum, which houses the
internationally significant art collection of the University of
Cambridge, operating seven days a week and welcoming over 400,000
visitors per year. The Hamilton Kerr Institute, situated eight miles
from Cambridge in the village of Whittlesford, is the painting
conservation department of the Museum, and is also the University's
postgraduate teaching institution for paintings conservation, with
an international reputation for the high quality of its programmes
of instruction and its research.

The Assistant to the Director (one of three senior paintings
conservator posts) will work on easel paintings and polychromy
ranging from the 13th to the 20th centuries, and will form part of
the practical teaching staff of the Institute. Candidates must be
graduates of a conservation programme and have extensive
demonstrable experience in the conservation of easel paintings. A
demonstrable interest in teaching, and relevant experience, will be
desirable, and ideally the successful candidate will have skills in
the structural treatment of paintings on panel and canvas.

The Hamilton Kerr Institute accepts on average two primary Diploma
students every two years, and about six post-programme interns a
year. The studio staff consists of the Director, the Research
Scientist, three Assistants to the Director (senior conservators)
who teach practical conservation, and two or more other
conservators.

The successful candidate will be involved directly in teaching and
supervision of students and interns at the Institute. S/he will also
undertake conservation treatments, lead larger projects which may
involve working "in-situ" away from the Institute, support the
Director in the management of the HKI and deputise for him. With the
facilities of the well-equipped studios and science laboratory, and
the Institute's responsibility for a major museum collection in the
Fitzwilliam Museum, as well as other public and private collections,
the post offers the opportunity to work on a wide variety of
conservation treatments, as well as undertaking research.

Detailed knowledge and experience of high-level conservation
treatments of easel paintings is essential. The ability to work
effectively and constructively, both independently and as part of a
team, are necessary, as well as highly effective communication and
mentoring skills, plus a well organised approach to work to ensure
deadlines are constantly achieved.
