Duties (summary):

    Serves as a NARA technical expert with responsibility for
    planning a program of research and analysis of problems relating
    to the preservation of archival materials such as paper,
    polymers, photographic film, and sound and video media.

    Provides scientific information to assist in establishing
    preservation standards for archives such as the material
    appropriate for creation and storage of archival records,
    appropriate environmental conditions for records storage,
    reproduction processes, and material and chemical processes used
    to stabilize and preserve records.

    Develops performance and technical specifications to meet
    archival standards.

    Prepares reports which document preservation research, testing
    and study findings and recommendations

    Represents NARA in the area of preservation science at
    conferences and meetings of national conservation and
    preservation organizations

    Prepares publications or delivers oral presentations to NARA
    allied communities regarding agency conservation and
    preservation issues and activities.
