Associate Conservator
Boston Athenaeum

The Boston Athenaeum seeks an Associate Conservator to perform
complex conservation treatments on bound and unbound paper-based
materials from the collections of the Boston Athenaeum. The
Associate Conservator reports to the Associate Director for Digital
Programs and Preservation, and supports the work of the Boston
Athenaeum across all departments. The position is fulltime, 35 hours
per week, with full benefits.

Responsibilities:

    Identify treatment options for paper-based special collections
    materials dating from the seventeenth century to the present,
    including rare books, manuscripts, archival documents, maps, and
    prints

    Execute structural and aesthetic conservation treatments on
    bound and unbound library materials, exercising a high degree of
    judgment in applying established conservation principles and
    procedures

    Document treatments of rare materials with full written and
    photographic documentation, in accordance with the Code of
    Ethics of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic
    and Artistic Works

    Collaborate on digitization projects Participate in disaster
    planning, response and recovery

    Assist in exhibition preparation and installation, and prepare
    condition reports for exhibited, loaned, or borrowed materials

    Perform related duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

    Education: Graduate degree or professional training in the
    conservation of books and archival documents, or equivalent
    experience

Experience:

    Working knowledge of conservation theory and practice,
    historical book structures, and the deterioration and
    conservation of paper-based materials

    Demonstrated success performing single-item conservation
    treatments on bound and unbound library materials

    Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and
    judgment in planning and carrying out conservation functions

    Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications:

    Familiarity with database and digital imaging software
