Subject: Coated paper
I am currently doing research for my MA in Conservation Studies and I am interested in conservation of coated paper materials, specifically periodicals and catalogues. I am focusing on infilling, or compensating for losses on these kinds of materials. Does anyone have experience of this kind of treatment? If so: What kind of paper do you use to infill? (European, Japanese, handmade, machine-made) Do you try and match up the repair paper with the original in terms of surface quality? If so, how is this done? Do you replicate the surface yourself? How do you attach the repair paper to the original? What kind or adhesive do you use? Does the repair overlap the original? And finally, how successful have you found this treatment to be? Have you identified any problems with it? Your input and experiences would be extremely helpful in compiling and idea of how professional conservators are tackling this problem.
