Subject: Position at Centre for Sustainable Heritage, UCL
At UCL Centre for Sustainable Heritage, in collaboration with National Archief (The Netherlands) and TeraView (UK), we are delighted to be able to offer an exceptionally exciting EngD studentship, project title: "Terahertz Imaging for Archival Heritage". This project aims to introduce state-of-the-art THZ pulsed imaging systems into the practice of structural and chemical monitoring of heritage objects of organic origin (full project proposal available on request). This interdisciplinary project crossing the domains of physics, engineering, chemistry, computer science and conservation, will develop methods for imaging of information, structures and degradation beneath the immediate surface of valuable archival objects. The successful applicant will have a physical science, mathematics, or engineering background, with experience in experimental research. Experience with instrumental material characterisation and an interest in cultural heritage are desirable. The student will be supervised jointly by Dr Matija Strlic (UCL Bartlett School of Graduate Studies, Centre for Sustainable Heritage), Professor Sir Michael Pepper (Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and Director of Teraview) and Dr Phil Taday (Teraview). The student is expected to submit short monthly reports to the co-funder (Nationaal Archief) who will be consulted on all collection management and conservation issues. To apply, please e-mail Dr. Matija Strlic <m.strlic<-a t->ucl< . >ac< . >uk> a covering letter and a full CV (including contact details for at least two academic referees plus marks/grades achieved on current courses). The covering letter should outline your interest in researching the suggested topic, and a clear statement of your eligibility for this ESPRC funded award.
