Dyes in History and Archaeology - DHA 30
University of Derby Enterprise Centre
37 Bridge Street, Derby, England
12-15 October 2011

Deadline for abstracts: 15 July 2011

The 30th annual meeting of Dyes in History and Archaeology (DHA)
will take place on 12-15 October 2011 at the University of Derby
Enterprise Centre, 37 Bridge Street, Derby, England. This is a joint
meeting with the Royal Society of Chemistry Historical Group.

The informal meeting will be of interest to those involved in the
conservation of dyed textiles or in historic dyes, and will provide
an opportunity to network with delegates from many countries.

We invite oral or poster presentations which are relevant to both
dyes *and* history.

The last meeting of DHA was held in Lisbon in November 2010. Over
four days, 20 oral presentations were given, posters displayed,
guided tours of museums undertaken and the Saturday excursion was to
Alentejo: Manufactura de Tapecarias de Portalegre; Museu Guy Fino;
the historic city of Evora and its museum. 97 Delegates attended
from 21 countries. Oral presentations ranged from mainly historical
to rather technical, e.g.,

The Orchil Trail: from Portugal and Angola (Isabella Whitworth)
detailed the activities of John Wilby, an agent in Lisbon of the
Leeds dye manufacturer Wood and Bedford

Indigo carmine: favored but fading (Matthijs de Keijzer) a
complete history from the discovery (Johann Christian Barth,
    1743) to the present day

Kihachijo, an unusual, traditional Japanese yellow dye (Richard
Laursen) recent research into the dye obtained from the grass,
Arthraxon hispidus, which revealed a rich mixture of yellow
components, mainly heretofore unreported acid-stable flavanoid
    C-glycosides

LC-ESI MS/MS study of pre-Columbian Peruvian textiles from the
state ethnographic museum in Warsaw (Katarzyna Lech) a new
method for structure determination of historic dyes
