Yale University

Reporting to the Director of the Center for Conservation and
Preservation, the Director of Scientific Research will establish and
lead a research laboratory serving all the collections of cultural
property at Yale University. The Director of Scientific Research
will plan, conduct, and foster research, develop analytical
procedures, lead the analysis of the collections and long-term plans
for the Center. Participate in international conferences and publish
in peer-reviewed journals. It is anticipated that the laboratory
will develop particular expertise in non-destructive methods of
examination and analysis and take advantage of the resources of the
Digital Center, which will also be established at Yale West Campus.
In addition to dedicated equipment in the research laboratory, the
Director will utilize the resources of the University to further
instrumental analysis of cultural materials, both on the Yale West
Campus and on the Central Campus. The Director will hire and manage
a staff of professionals, pre- and post-doctoral students, and
research fellows.

Qualifications:

    Ph.D. in Chemistry or another physical science combined with a
    demonstrated interest in the conservation of cultural materials.

    Experience in the application of scientific techniques to the
    conservation of cultural materials.

    Experience in the examination and analysis of the materials and
    techniques of material culture.

    Experience with microscopy.

    Supervisory experience with technical and/or professional staff
    demonstrating high-level management and interpersonal skills.

    Project management experience with a proven track record of
    completion on time.

    A record of membership of appropriate professional bodies,
    participation in and contribution to conferences and workshops.

    A record of peer reviewed publications.

    Strong experience with museum and/or cultural heritage work and
    research.

    Knowledge of material science and of the interactions between
    materials and their environment.

    Demonstrated experimental and theoretical skills in their
    academic discipline and in the mechanisms of deterioration of
    cultural property.
