In February 2011 the World Collection Programme funded Tate painting
conservator Rachel Barker and Tate Modern curator Kerryn Greenberg
to visit the National Galleries of Zimbabwe in Harrare and Bulawayo.
The purpose of their visit was to do an initial conservation
assessment of the national art collections and give advice to
dedicated staff on how best to care for a collection, currently in
storage, due to the insecure political status of the country. Rachel
and Kerryn were given access to spotless store rooms housing
extraordinary treasures. The ultimate gems were to be found in a dry
store room in Bulawayo.
