The Object Conservation Department at the National Gallery of Art
seeks a candidate for the position of Conservation Technician within
the Conservation Division.  The technician assists object
conservators in preparing materials used in treatments,
photographing objects, x radiographing objects and maintaining the
radiograph files and database. The technician prepares stock
solutions used in the Object Conservation Laboratory, monitors and
orders supplies and equipment. The selected candidate will log art
objects in and out of the laboratory, periodically confirm the
accuracy of art object inventories, assist object conservators in
checking condition of art objects received for exhibition and help
with the annual inspection of art objects as well as the object
condition database.  Duties also include assisting with slide
labeling, cross referencing slides, keeping slide collection in
order, maintaining reports and organizing all types of documentation
in the object conservation laboratory files.

Qualifications: Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards
Handbook requirements for this federal position. This requires at
least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the General
Schedule grade 5 level in Federal service OR 1 full academic year of
related graduate level education in art history, museum studies, or
chemistry or an undergraduate degree with superior academic
achievement (see below for explanation) in art history, museum
studies, chemistry, or other courses directly related to this
position.  An equivalent combination of education and experience is
fully qualifying and meets the minimum qualification requirements.
Specialized experience is experience assessing the condition of art
objects, photographing art objects, and writing descriptive reports
of art objects in support of the conservation process.

Starting compensation in this position for qualified candidates is
$42,209.

Candidates who meet the Superior Academic Achievement provision
outlined in the Qualification Standards Handbook will be eligible
for employment consideration. S.A.A. is based on 1) class standing,
2) grade point average, or 3) honor society membership.

One: Class standing applicants must be in the upper 1/3 of their
college or university graduating class.  Two: Grade point average
applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher out of a
possible 4.0 based on 4 years of education OR 3.5 or higher out of a
possible 4.0 based on the average of required courses completed in
their major field of study.  Three: Honor society membership
applicants will be considered basically qualified based on their
membership in one of certain national scholastic honor societies.

Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements
will be evaluated against the following factors to determine the
best qualified candidates.  1) Knowledge of art materials and
techniques and the elements of chemistry related to works of art. 2)
Knowledge of conservation processes and techniques related to works
of art. 3) Skill in the assessment and inspection of art works. 4)
Skill in writing technical reports on works of art.
