20|21 Conservacao e Restauro, a Portuguese contemporary art
conservation studio, has invited Velson Horie to teach a 4 day
course aimed at paintings conservators.

Velson Horie will draw together the different strands of information
needed to make an informed choice. These include the scientific and
technological background of materials used on paintings, their
mechanical properties, ethical aspects of choices, methods of
assessment and decision making.The successes, and failures, of
synthetic polymers are prompting a re-evaluation of the
materials,both natural and synthetic, applied to paintings. But how
to choose? This Masterclass will explore the chemical and physical
properties that underpin the strategies in formulating and applying
treatments.

Topics include:| Polymers used in conservation (including acrylic,
cross-linking and natural polymers)| Solvents, properties and their
hazards| Physical and adhesion properties| Developing and choosing
an adhesive system

Duration: Four full-time days, from 15-18 June 2011

Language of instruction: English

Number of participants: Maximum 15

Target group: Registration is open to conservators, conservation
scientists and restorers

Registration fee: Euro 660 + 23% VAT = Euro 811,8

Deadline for application: 3 June 2011.
