Cultural heritage preservation requires connection to issues that surround international social and economic development and civil society. It requires regular assessment of our graduate programs of study to strengthen critical thinking, craft, technical, scientific, and leadership skills, while developing emerging professionals who can collaborate fully with artists, curators, archivists, librarians, scientists, and the public. It is essential to involve communities in collections care, be proactive, and think strategically. This presentation will address ongoing efforts to preserve the global photographic heritage and share strategies for fundraising success. Debra Hess Norris is Chair of the Art Conservation Department and Professor of Photograph Conservation at the University of Delaware, where she has been a faculty member since 1982. During that time, she has served as the chair of Heritage Preservation, president of the American Institute for the Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC), president of the board of the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts, U.S. commissioner to UNESCO, and project director of The Andrew W. Mellon Collaborative Workshops in Photograph Conservation. She has secured over $10 million in external grants for the University's Art Conservation Department. She has authored more than 30 articles and book chapters on care and treatment of photographic materials, emergency response, ethics, and conservation education and has taught more than 95 workshops and seminars for conservators and allied professionals worldwide.
