Subject: E.C.C.O. 20th anniversary
E.C.C.O. 20th Anniversary E.C.C.O., the European Confederation of Conservator-Restorers' Organisations A.I.S.B.L., celebrated its 20th anniversary last 4-5 April 2011, at the occasion of its General Assembly and Presidents' Meeting. This two-day meeting was held in the 17th c. cloister building Pati Manning, in the heart of Barcelona, Spain. E.C.C.O. is a confederation of conservation associations of the EU and EFTA States. It was established in 1991 to develop and promote the profession of conservator-restorer, to support its high level of education and training, and to work towards the legal recognition of its professional status. Documentation in archives shows that the first goals of E.C.C.O., 20 years ago, were: "definition of the profession, establishment of code of ethics, education and training, title, accreditation and register". Even if the profession has gained recognition in several fields and a legal definition in some countries, these issues remain today of actuality. E.C.C.O. is proud to have produced several reference documents for European professionals, training programs, institutions working in the field of preservation of Cultural Heritage and legislators (see the 'E.C.C.O. Professional Guidelines', which include the definition of the profession, the Code of Ethics and the Basic Requirements for Education in Conservation/Restoration: <URL:http://www.ecco-eu.org/about-e.c.c.o./aims-and-objectives.html> E.C.C.O. has recently produced the professional Competences of the conservator-restorer "Competences for Access to the Conservation-Restoration Profession" (2011) and is working at present on a Recommendation for the Council of Europe to harmonise legislation on cultural heritage preservation among the EU States. To celebrate this 20th anniversary in Barcelona, the E.C.C.O. Committee and the Delegates had the honour and the chance to meet its founding members and former presidents. Almost all of them were able to attend this meeting and discussed with the "young" ones on the evolution of our profession. Founding members present were: Simon Barcham Green, Karl Faltermeier, Wolfram Gabler, Stephane Pennec, Mogens S. Koch, Werner Koch, David Leigh, Carole Milner, Nathalie Ravanel, Ulrich Schieissl, Myriam Serck-Dewaide and Valentine Walsh. Other former presidents, Ylva Dahnsjo, Gerlinde Tautschnig and Pierre Masson also joined us. E.C.C.O. today is composed by 22 organisations from 20 European states representing more than 5.000 professional conservator-restorers.
