Contract Paper Conservator The Smithsonian Haiti Cultural Recovery Project seeks a paper conservator for a three month contract at their facility in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.The project aims to contribute to the rescue and preservation of Haiti's important artistic heritage.The January 12, 20 earthquake resulted in thousands of damaged art works, including works of art on paper, archival documents, and books.Haiti has a tropical climate with a rainy season; thus, many works have significant structural damage and/or serious mold issues. More information about project activities may be found at <URL:http://www.haiti.si.edu> Responsibilities include: assisting with studio set-up (many supplies and small tools are in place already); assessing condition of large collections of damaged works on paper; prioritizing treatments; developing stabilization treatment protocols; performing treatments; and training technicians/apprentices. Qualifications: graduate of an accredited conservation program; minimum of five years of post-graduate experience; and supervisory experience.French and/or Creole language skills are desirable. Familiarity with Haitian art is a plus. Experience living or working in a developing country is helpful. Salary is $13,500 for the three-month period, plus travel and living expenses.
